Pampering a battery to achieve an extended service life, as is sometimes possible with a camcorder or digital camera, is more difficult with a large battery in a vehicle that must deliver high load currents on command and is exposed to freezing temperatures in the winter and blistering summer conditions.
The smarter way to charge Lithium-based batteries - When the battery charger recharges your batteries, it not only maximizes battery performance and lifespan, it also conserves energy.
1. A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge.
2. Do not use up all battery energy before charging. Deep discharge wears the battery down.
3. Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge below freezing.
4. Lithium-ion battery does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better. Store in cool place partially charged, do not fully drain
5. Chargers use different methods for “ready” indication. The light signal may not always indicate a full charge.
6. Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.
